Rain is forecast for this week, so this morning I trotted out to look over the yard and see what is most important to get done before the rains. But, instead of paying attention to fallen leaves and what plants need to be pulled out of the garden, I saw—right before my eyes—two painted ladies flirting and flitting in the zinnias. What a perfect fall color combination. Their body hair is much longer than I noticed in the summer. Could it be possible they get winter coats? (That’s not a rhetorical question, if anyone knows the answer, please let me know.) I hope they leave eggs to overwinter in our yard.
The skippers are out in full force and I love watching these abundant butterflies as they flutter from flower to flower. They aren’t at all afraid of me and they come very close regularly and let me hover over them with the camera.
Miniscule magic in my yard—hearty even in 38 degree mornings.
