For years, my father has told me about his “pretty snow” in Colorado Springs, and I, Ms. Northern California Sunshine, say “you can have it.” Imagine my consternation at our forecast for this week—snow! Noooooo. See Dad laugh.
While I know we need rain, and I’ll accept it gracefully (well, sort of) what I don’t want is snow. Sure it’s pretty to look at, but it’s cold. Cold, cold, cold. It seeps into my bones and makes me stiff and creakier. But, the real kicker is, I have to accept it (albeit not gracefully). As the Stones sang so eloquently, “You can’t always get what you wa-haunt.”
The snow will finish off last summer’s garden. I was still getting a few tomatoes, chiles and chard (see how spoiled I am). I’ll still have the chard, but I’ll have to say goodbye to those last chiles and tomatoes. But, I still have the chard, and the broccoli, cauliflower, beets, Romaine, and cabbage look great. I don’t know whether the Romaine will survive the snow. I guess I’m going to find out. Asparagus this year, too. Yum.
I know we need the cold, cold freezes to give us our stone fruits—the peaches and nectarines that we enjoy so much from June through August, so I search for better attitude toward the weather. I would prefer not to ration water this coming year, either, because the rules would likely prohibit gardening.
Okay, enough whining from the wine country. Blessings to all.
Just to show that I'm not always so cranky with the weather. This is one aspect of playing in the park.
